On a year over year basis, Stephen Cohen increased his wealth by $900 million, while RenTec’s Jim Simons boosted his fortune by $0.5b. Tiger Management’s legendary fund manager Julian Robertson saw a $900 million increase in his net worth as well. David Tepper of Appaloosa Management saw an impressive increase as he gained $2.3 billion in one year’s time as his hedge fund’s bet on financials paid off handsomely. Besting Tepper though was John Paulson. The subprime maestro doubled his fortune from $6 billion last year to $12 billion this year as his impressive run continued. Carlos Slim Helu amassed his wealth from numerous businesses, but Carlos Slim Helu is most famous for his telecommunications holdings. Carlos Slim Helu bought formerly state-owned Teléfonos de México (Telmex) in 1990. His América Móvil is the largest cell phone operator in Latin America, according to Spanish daily El País.

Carlos Slim Helu also owns a significant share of the U.S. newspaper The New York Times.

“Carlos Slim Helu’s fortune has swelled to an estimated $53.5 billion, up $18.5 billion in 12 months,” the Forbes report says.

It is the first time a Latin American has topped the magazines list of billionaires.

Congratulation to Carlos Slim Helu for become richest man in the world. Well done Sir.

David starr Jordan Middle School teacher Amy Victoria Beck is scheduled be arraigned in Burbank Superior Court today on four counts of unlawful sex and one count of oral copulation with a person under the age of 16.

According to reports, Beck walked into Burbank police station Monday afternoon told officers she “had sexual relations with one of her students.”

Police later interviewed the boy who corroborated the teacher’s story saying the encounters occurred between March and September 2009 when he was 14.

It is unclear whether Beck turned herself in because an arrest warrant had been issued or if the guilt got to her.

The rookie of the year, batting champion and All-Star whose trade began a bitter back-and-forth in Boston and, for Nomar Garciaparra, an inglorious slide into irrelevance, signed a ceremonial one-day contract with the Red Sox on Wednesday for the purpose of retiring in the uniform of his original team.

“From the first day I had the thrill of putting on a Red Sox uniform and playing in front of all the great fans at Fenway Park, I have felt at home in Boston,” Nomar Garciaparra said in a statement that belied the ugliness that accompanied his departure. “While I had the privilege of playing with other legendary teams, I always saw myself retiring in a Red Sox uniform.”

Nomar Garciaparra announced he’s leaving baseball at 36 to become an ESPN analyst, ending a 14-year career in which he was a six-time All-Star and two-time batting champion. But the career that started with the 1997 AL Rookie of the Year award began to crumble when the Red Sox tried to acquire Alex Rodriguez after the 2003 season – a deal that probably would have forced them to trade Nomar Garciaparra.

Although the Rodriguez deal fell through, the talks upset Nomar Garciaparra, and an Achilles’ tendon injury that kept him out until June the next season didn’t help his mood. It also didn’t help that the market for shortstops had plummeted since he rejected a four-year, $60 million offer from the Red Sox.

With the Red Sox struggling at midseason, general manager Theo Epstein traded Nomar Garciaparra for shortstop Orlando Cabrera and defensive first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Accusations of disloyalty flew, and Red Sox fans were stunned to lose their “No-mah.”

But they soon overcame their grief: The Red Sox went 42-18 for the best finish in baseball, capping the season with their first World Series crown since 1918.

Nomar Garciaparra watched from afar.

“I felt like I was there,” he said. “In Boston there’s something greater than an individual player winning a World Series. When I was there I realized there’s something bigger than us winning a World Series. It’s winning a World Series for these people.”

Epstein, who grew up in the Boston area, knew the risk he was taking by trading away the shortstop who had been the most popular player on the team.

“We’ve been fortunate over the years to maintain a relationship after the trade,” Epstein said. “I think both of us understood at the time that it wasn’t about Nomar and it wasn’t about me. It was just baseball trades that happen. They’re about what’s going on with the team at the time and certain things that had to happen. But, it didn’t change what Nomar meant to the Red Sox.”

Terry Francona, who led the team to a World Series title in his rookie season as Red Sox manager, saw just the last few months of Garciaparra’s time at Fenway Park.

“His last part in Boston was tough,” Francona said. “He was kind of Boston-ed out. It had kind of wore on him for whatever reasons. Sometimes it’s time to move on. That doesn’t mean he’s a bad person. I think the fact he’s come back kind of shows that.”

Garciaparra’s teammates – the beneficiaries of his acrobatic defense and clutch hitting – found it appropriate that he retired in a Boston uniform.

“He was a Red Sox for a long time and I think he’ll always be remembered as a Red Sox,” said pitcher Tim Wakefield, who was Garciaparra’s teammate for the shortstop’s entire stay in Boston. “For the organization to sign him to a one-day deal and have him retire as a Red Sox is pretty special. I’m really happy for him. I wish he was still playing but sometimes our careers take different paths.”

Garciaparra threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Wednesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, with former Red Sox and Georgia Tech teammate Jason Varitek catching.

“Nomar will always hold a special place in Red Sox history and in the hearts of Red Sox Nation,” owner John Henry said. “His accomplishments on the field and in the community place him among the greatest players to wear a Red Sox uniform. We are very appreciative that Nomar is ending his career where it began.”

Garciaparra spent the past five seasons with the Cubs, Dodgers and A’s. He had a .313 career average with 229 home runs and 936 RBIs.

Garciaparra was in the thick of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry but always earned the respect of his opponents in New York.

“I always enjoyed playing against Boston because of Nomar,” Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter said. “I used to enjoy being mentioned with him.”

Added Rodriguez: “I love Nomar. He’s a great player and a friend.”

Minneapolis Police Sgt. Jesse Garcia says officers learned early Wednesday that someone had threatened to open fire in a school then shoot themselves.

The threat was made on two social networking sites. He says the threat didn’t specify which school was the target, so the district decided to lock down all its buildings.

Garcia says at a news conference that police are taking the threats seriously and working to track down who posted them.

District spokeswoman Emily Lowther says the 34,000 students in the district continue to go to class, but access to the buildings is restricted. She says parents have been notified of the situation.

It’s likely that the alert status will last for the remainder of the day. The district notified parents with its automated telephone system. Another announcement will go out when the district knows more.

* JIRA Studio: A hosted software development suite from Atlassian enables software developers to flow naturally between Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs and other design and development tools in order to better track and manage project issues and workflow.

Once installed to a company’s domain, these third-party applications work like native Google applications. With administrator approval, they may interact with calendar, email, document and/or contact data to increase productivity. Administrators can manage the applications from the familiar Google Apps control panel, and employees can open them from within Google Apps. Corey Haim’s drug use took over his life, however, and helped ruin his career.

After starring in several direct-to-video films in the 1990s, Corey Haim made a comeback in 2006 in the reality series “The Two Coreys” with Corey Feldman.

The successful show lasted two seasons, but Feldman said he refused to do a third season because of Haim’s continued drug use.

Corey Haim was involved in several projects at the time of his death, including the film “The Science of Cool” with actress Mischa Barton, due out in 2010, and “The Dead Sea,” which is currently filming.

Given the number of searches for ‘Assburger’s Syndrome’ [sic] this morning, it seems so.

NBC’s new TV drama ‘Parenthood,’ which airs Tuesday nights, features a couple whose son has Asperger’s, an autism spectrum disorder.

Wednesday morning, queries relating to ‘Asperger’s Disease’ topped Google Trends, which tracks popular search terms.

While people’s curiosity and efforts to understand Asperger’s syndrome are to be applauded, we couldn’t help but be taken aback by the volume of searches for ‘Assburger’s Syndrome.’

Time to start studying the dictionary?

Perhaps people really were looking for information on ‘Assburger’s’–but if so, we’ve never heard of the illness. (although Urban Dictionary and Uncyclopedia do have definitions have the term ‘Assburgers.’)

It was the night a collection of superheroes humiliated Hulk – and turned their Champions League rivals into green-eyed monsters. Arsenal blew away the baddest man in world football and his Porto mates and left them very, very angry.

Angry because they couldn’t get near Arsene Wenger’s super-slick band of footballing aristocrats.

Angry because they must have thought they had a chance against a side that was minus skipper and playmaker Cesc Fabregas.

And angry because the man who did the most damage was Nicklas Bendtner, a striker who was pilloried for blowing four gilt-edged chances against Burnley at the weekend.

Last night, though, he couldn’tmiss.

He claimed a superb hat-trick as the Gunners made history by roaring back from an opening-leg deficit in a Euro tie for the first time since 1978.

But if Bendtner was deadly, Samir Nasri was dead brilliant.

The France star slalomed his way past the Porto defence as if he had just stepped off the slopes at Vancouver’s Winter Olympics before thundering a shot home from a ridiculously-tight angle.

Emmanuel Eboue netted the other goal to send Wenger’s men into the quarter-finals in emphatic style as the Emirates crowd drooled like a bunch of teething babies.

As for Porto, well they were pulvarised – including their Brazilian striker Hulk. He’s been in a bit of a huff of late because he’s serving a four-month ban from domestic football for attacking match stewards.

His mood was turned as dark as the night that hung over north London.

It wasn’t meant to be this easy, though. Not only was Wenger missing Fabregas,he was also without William Gallas.

But just 10 minutes in it was a case of Fabregas who? Keeper Manuel Almunia, standing in as captain, booted a long clearance up field that Andrey Arshavin nodded back for Nasri.

The Frenchman knocked a quick pass between the centre-backs for the Russian to run on to.

In tracking back, Porto defender Fucile clattered into his keeper and Bendtner was first to react, stabbing the loose ball into the empty net. Helton needed treatment for a head injury, caught accidentally by Arshavin, but after a short delay the Brazilian was able to continue.

With the tie now level, Arsenal were hell-bent on going ahead as Abou Diaby hooked a 12-yard effort over.

Porto continued to pass the ball crisply, but were undone again on 25 minutes.

Fucile’s poor clearance was latched on to by Arshavin. The pocket-sized Russian weaved into the left side of the box, before pulling the ball back along the six-yard line to Bendtner who could not miss.

Arsenal were then left counting their lucky stars when Hulk seized on a mistake by right-back Gael Clichy and cut in towards goal.

But he could only stab his shot into the arms of Almunia.

As the play raged towards the other end, Helton touched Bendtner’s curling effort around the post.

From the corner, Diaby’s downward header was clawed away by the Porto keeper, who also denied Nasri in stoppage time.

There was a scare at the start of the second half when Tomas Rosicky gave the ball away to Hulk but fortunately for the Czech winger, the Porto striker was again off target. Almunia then had to be on his toes as Falcao drove in a low snapshot that the Spaniard gathered at the second attempt.

Rosicky, who looked to be carrying a knee problem,was replaced by Eboue just before the hour as Wenger tried to breathe new life into his side.

It didn’t take long to take effect but for the time being Arsenal were struggling at the back.

In fact, it took little Nasri to clear a header from substitute Cristian Rodriguez off the line.

He was a saviour in his own box before becoming a superstar at the other. In 64 minutes the midfielder then settled any nerves with a brilliant individual goal. After collecting the ball just outside the area on the right, Nasri twisted past three Porto defenders before drilling a low shot in off the far post.

Safe passage to the quarter-finals was assured three minutes later when, following a Porto corner, Arshavin broke quickly down the left, holding the ball up before releasing the on-rushing Eboue, who rounded the keeper and stroked in a fourth.

Porto had lost here 4-0 in the group stage last season, which was their worst away defeat in the competition.

But they’ve now got a new record and over the final 20 minutes, it was a case of damage limitation for Jesualdo Ferreira’s men. Nasri was given a well-earned rest as he left the field to a standing ovation, replaced by defensive midfielder Denilson. Fellow sub Theo Walcott looked lively after he came on for Arshavin, and Bendtner headed a good hat-trick chance wide.

But the wait for the match ball wasn’t to last too much longer.

Eboue was brought down by Fucile to concede a penalty in the final minute which young Dane Bendtner stroked into the bottom corner to cap an incredible night and Wenger said: “Nicklas had not lost the confidence, it remains relatively stable.

“He came back with good focus and the same belief – that is one of his strengths as well.”

On his history-makers, Wenger added: “The statistics and history were against us but that just shows those do not mean a lot if you have a team on the pitch who believes they can win.”
