Mortar Rounds Mark Iraq Election Day

Reporting from Baghdad – Dozens of mortar rounds thudded across Baghdad on Sunday morning and at least 12 people were killed as Iraqis went to the polls in an election testing the stability of the country’s still-fragile democracy.

Insurgents had vowed to disrupt the elections — which they see as validating the Shiite-led government and the U.S. presence — with violence in order to increase uncertainty over a looming U.S. troop drawdown and widen still jagged sectarian divisions.

As the polls opened at 7 a.m., bombs began exploding and mortar rounds landing across the city.

In the Shurta neighborhood in west Baghdad, at least eight people were confirmed dead as rescuers pulled 20 victims from a three-story building that collapsed after an explosion.

Italy Scandal A Labyrinth Of Intrigue

The governor made off to a monastery after having affairs with transsexuals, but not before the cops videotaped a tryst, all flesh and white powder, and offered to sell copies to a magazine owned by the prime minister, who, at the time, was rumored to be entangled with an underage Neapolitan model.

Then one of the transsexuals, a Brazilian named Brenda, turned up naked and dead, her laptop computer submerged under a running tap. Oh, yeah, and the drug dealer who supplied cocaine to the governor and Brenda would meet his own demise. It’s an odd coincidence.

Piero Marrazzo, a married governor and onetime crusading TV reporter, was having a dalliance with Natalie on a July afternoon when four cops burst into her apartment and began recording with a cellphone camera. Marrazzo, blushing in his skivvies, found himself the victim of blackmail, while Natalie, a transsexual with an artistic flair for makeup, hit YouTube and the news show circuit.

Marrazzo resigned his government post and reportedly sought refuge in a Benedictine monastery. The police officers were arrested and charged with extorting about $27,500 from Marrazzo to keep the video hush-hush, even as they were peddling their scratchy little production to potential buyers.

In Baghdad, Sunnis Await Elections With Unease

Most Sunni Arabs are hopeful that the Iraqi parliamentary elections will correct an imbalance in power and give the minority more representation, but they also worry about an adverse outcome.

In the once-turbulent Sunni enclave of Adhamiya, hope that the elections Sunday will herald a dramatic change in Iraq’s leadership mingles ominously with fear that it won’t.

There’s none of the reluctance that characterized the last elections in December 2005, when a boycott call from Sunni Arab leaders and the ubiquitous presence of insurgents deterred most people from going to the polls, and candidates didn’t dare campaign for fear of being killed.

This time, huge billboards promoting Sunni and secular candidates jostle for attention on drab streets strewn with garbage. Top politicians, including Sunni Vice President Tariq Hashimi and former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, have made campaign appearances, mingling with citizens in markets, kissing babies and urging everyone to vote.

Chile Quake 2010 Death Toll 700 as Tsunami Slams Coast

The massive earthquake and resulting tsunamis that rocked Chile killed 350 people in one Chilean coastal town alone, doubling the total death toll on Sunday as the government tried to get aid to hungry survivors.

President Michelle Bachelet said at least 708 people had been killed and called for calm as people desperate for food and water looted stores in some areas worst hit by Saturday’s 8.8-magnitude quake, one of the world’s biggest in a century.

Television images showed houses washed away, cars tossed into buildings and boats lifted into the streets in coastal towns, including Pelluhue and Constitucion, where 350 deaths alone were reported.

“It’s an enormous catastrophe . . . there’s a growing number of missing people,” Bachelet said, adding that food and medical aid was being sent to help the roughly two million people affected by the quake.

The quake wrecked hundreds of thousands of homes, mangled highways and bridges and dealt a heavy blow to the world’s No. 1 copper-producing industry and one of Latin America’s most stable economies.
