Champions League: Big Wins For Arsenal At Emirates

Arsenal win 6-2 on aggregate

It was the night a collection of superheroes humiliated Hulk – and turned their Champions League rivals into green-eyed monsters. Arsenal blew away the baddest man in world football and his Porto mates and left them very, very angry.

Angry because they couldn’t get near Arsene Wenger’s super-slick band of footballing aristocrats.

Angry because they must have thought they had a chance against a side that was minus skipper and playmaker Cesc Fabregas.

And angry because the man who did the most damage was Nicklas Bendtner, a striker who was pilloried for blowing four gilt-edged chances against Burnley at the weekend.

Last night, though, he couldn’tmiss.

He claimed a superb hat-trick as the Gunners made history by roaring back from an opening-leg deficit in a Euro tie for the first time since 1978.

Joe Nathan Has Torn Elbow Ligament

Minnesota Twins reliever Joe Nathan has been diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right elbow, leaving the team without a proven closer less than a month from Opening Day.

Joe Nathan has a torn ulnar collateral ligament and will decide whether to have surgery within two weeks, the team said. The Minneapolis Star Tribune first reported Joe Nathan injury.

The team announced Joe Nathan has a “significant tear,” but will not immediately opt for surgery. Joe Nathan will rest and rehab the elbow over the next one to two weeks, then determine whether Joe Nathan can pitch with the injury.

Joe Nathan may get a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, the surgeon who operated on his elbow last October to remove bone chips.

Surgery would likely cost Joe Nathan all of the 2010 season — a potentially devastating turn of events for a team expected to contend in the AL Central Division. Injuries to the ulnar collateral ligament have led to season-ending Tommy John surgery for other pitchers.

Kyle Kuric, The Last Hero of Freedom

Louisville upended No. 1 rival Syracuse on Saturday, ensuring that Freedom Hall’s final college basketball game would also be its greatest. And it wouldn’t have happened without Kyle Kuric. Kuric scored 22 points — all in the second half — to send the Cardinals surging ahead to a lead they never gave up.

Keep in mind that Kuric is a reserve sophomore who was averaging 3.5 points a game this season. After doing some math, I found that Kuric has averaged about 0.26 points per minute on the floor. In the second half of today’s game — the most important half of the season for the Cardinals — Kuric averaged over one point a minute.

So now that Kyle Kuric has achieved cult hero status, let’s take a moment to get to know him. His official Louisville biography page lists some of his favorites.

Books: Time Travel in Einstein’s Universe: The Physical Possibilities of Travel Through Time

Actor: Kevin James

He’s kind of all over the place here, isn’t he? I’m most intrigued by his love of Skillet. Really? Skillet? Well, you’ve earned it, Mr. Kuric. This one goes out to you.

High Cost of McCourts’ Divorce: $19 Million In Fees

Frank and Jamie McCourt’s divorce could become one of the costliest splits in California history, with attorneys and accountants commanding as much as $19 million in fees — more than the Dodgers will spend on their starting infield this season.

Frank McCourt has estimated his “divorce-related expenses” at $5 million to $10 million, according to court filings. Jamie McCourt has estimated her expenses at $9 million — and asked that her estranged husband be ordered to pay them.

Although records of salaries and statistics are omnipresent in baseball, specific information about divorce costs is largely unavailable. The Times consulted with several family law experts, none of whom could recall a divorce costing $19 million.

“I’m pretty sure there’s not been any litigation in a California divorce where they’ve spent so much on attorneys’ fees,” said Lynn Soodik, a Santa Monica family law attorney who represented Meg Ryan in her divorce from Dennis Quaid.

Chicago Bears land DE Julius Peppers, RB Chester Taylor, Falcons get top CB Dunta Robinson

The five-time Pro Bowl defensive end and top free agent prize agreed today to a six-year deal with the Chicago Bears, the biggest move on a day the team showed it’s intent on contending again after missing the playoffs the past three seasons.

Terms of Peppers’ deal were not released. Several outlets reported it was worth $72 million, with about $40 million coming in the first three years. The NFL Network, citing a source, reported the deal was for $79.8 million, with $40 million guaranteed in the first three seasons.

Besides Peppers, the Bears lured running back Chester Taylor (River Rouge) from NFC North champion Minnesota with a four-year contract and blocking tight end Brandon Manumaleuna from San Diego with a five-year deal. Taylor’s contract is worth $12.5 million, with $7 million guaranteed, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiation. The person spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced.

By landing one of the league’s top pass rushers and a running back who could challenge incumbent Matt Forte, Chicago showed just how serious it is about contending in the NFC after missing the playoffs the past three years.

A coaching staff shake-up that left the Bears with new offensive and defensive coordinators in Mike Martz and Rod Marinelli was just a start.
